Plug-In tracking units as well as VidFleet Cameras utilizing OPC-03 cables can read information from the vehicle’s on-board computer which is known as the ECU.
One of these pieces of information are the DTC codes, also called Diagnostic or 'Fault' codes. These codes are generated by the ECU when problems are detected. When the ‘Check Engine’ light comes on, DTC codes are one of the items checked to determine the cause of the problem.
Active DTC codes can be viewed in the Maintenance section, within the Vehicles tab.
A red triangle indicates that a DTC code has been detected.
To view the code, click on the triangle. A list of Active codes will then appear, along with their time and date. Whenever possible, GPS Trackit will provide a definition of the code. Even without a definition though, having the code will assist in the resolution of the vehicle issues.
All codes are shown as Active when detected. To deactivate codes that have been addressed, click the checkbox to the left and then the Clear button at the bottom of the screen.
Once a DTC code has been cleared, the indicator will change. This is to show that a code was detected but is no longer active.
DTC code history can be found by clicking the History tab.
An alert is available to send out notifications if DTC codes are detected. Two options are available, for use depending on the vehicle type: Light Duty Diagnostics and Heavy Duty Diagnostics and is enabled via the Alerts bell icon.
When viewing a unit location on the Map, opening the info box will reveal if there are any active DTC codes.
Clicking the red indicator will reveal the codes to the right-hand side. Codes can be cleared directly from here, without needing to visit the Maintenance tab.
Once DTC codes are no longer active, this indicator will no longer show in red.
